We cannot agree on the 'correct' way to load the dishwasher.

By @umayk · Relationships

My girlfriend and I have a running argument about the dishwasher. they says I load it inefficiently, but I'm convinced my method gets things cleaner. It's become a weirdly consistent point of friction.

The full story

I am a logical person. I like things to be efficient and make sense. My girlfriend, who I love dearly, operates on a different wavelength when it comes to household chores, specifically, the dishwasher. My method is based on fluid dynamics and maximizing water jet exposure. I place plates in descending order of size, ensure that the concave surfaces of bowls and spoons face the center spray arm, and I never, ever let a knife point upwards. It's about safety and effectiveness. I also believe in pre-rinsing to avoid food clogs, which seems like common sense. Her method... is chaos. She puts things wherever they fit. Bowls will be facing the wrong way, blocking water flow. Glasses will be interspersed with greasy pans. She claims the dishwasher is powerful enough to handle it and that pre-rinsing is a waste of water. Her core argument is 'if it fits, it sits.' This has become a surprisingly frequent, low-grade argument. I'll come into the kitchen and find she has 're-organized' my carefully loaded dishwasher before starting it. Or I'll open it after a cycle and find a piece of caked-on food on a bowl, and I'll hold it up as 'Exhibit A' in the case for my method. She just rolls her eyes and says I'm being ridiculous. We've tried alternating who loads it, but then the other person just complains. I'm not trying to be controlling, I just want our dishes to be optimally clean. She thinks I'm making a simple chore into a complicated problem.
