I have a recurring calendar event to remind me to run my dishwasher.
By @hollyforsure · Relationships
It seems logical. It reminds me to do a chore that needs to get done on a regular basis, and ensures it doesn't get forgotten when life gets busy. My girlfriend saw it on my calendar and thinks it's the weirdest, most robotic thing she's ever seen.
The full story
To clarify, this isn't the only chore I do. It's just one that is easy to forget. My system is simple: I have a shared digital calendar with my girlfriend for appointments and social events. On my personal calendar, I have recurring reminders for tasks. For example, every Tuesday and Saturday night at 9pm, I get a notification that says 'Run Dishwasher.' This ensures we always have clean dishes, especially before the work week starts. It's a 'set it and forget it' system. Other reminders include 'Take Out Recycling' on Sunday evenings and 'Check Tire Pressure' on the 1st of every month. My girlfriend finds this bizarre. they says it's not natural and that people should just remember to do these things. She thinks it's a sign that I'm too rigid and can't function without a schedule. I see it as efficient. It's a simple way to offload mental energy. I don't have to *remember* to do the dishes; a system does it for me, freeing up my mind for other things. She thinks it's strange that I need a notification to see a full dishwasher and act on it. Is this really that weird or is it just a practical life hack?
