I lied to my boyfriend about our apartment being haunted to get out of our lease.

I know it sounds insane, but this place is a nightmare and he wouldn't listen to me. I was desperate to get out before we signed a renewal for another year.

The full story

Okay, so when we moved in, my boyfriend was so excited. It was 'our first real place together.' But it's been a disaster. The plumbing is a joke—our shower either scalds you or freezes you, no in-between. The neighbors above us sound like they're hosting a nightly bowling tournament. And the landlord just ignores every email. I've been bringing it up for months, telling my boyfriend we need to find somewhere else when our lease is up. He just kept saying 'it's not that bad' and 'we're getting a good deal on rent.' A good deal on misery is still misery! So... I started small. I'd 'hear things' at night. A cup would be mysteriously moved. I downloaded one of those 'spooky sounds' apps and would play faint whispers when he was in the other room. He was skeptical, but it was planting a seed. The final straw was last week. I hid his car keys and then 'found' them inside the freezer. He went completely pale. Then I told him I saw a 'shadowy figure' in the hallway. I laid it on thick, crying, saying I was too scared to sleep here anymore. It worked. He called the landlord the next day, said we were breaking the lease due to 'untenable and disturbing activity,' and now we're moving. I feel awful for lying, but also... I'm so relieved. Did I go too far?
