Unpopular opinion: putting ketchup on a good steak should be illegal.

My boyfriend (31) and I (29) went to a really nice steakhouse for our anniversary. He ordered a dry-aged ribeye and then asked for ketchup. I was mortified.

The full story

My boyfriend and I have been together for five years, and for our anniversary I wanted to do something special. I made reservations weeks in advance at a high-end steakhouse that's famous for its dry-aged beef. We're talking $90+ per steak. I was so excited for him to try it because he's always said he appreciates good food. Everything was going great—the ambiance was perfect, the service was impeccable. We both ordered the 45-day dry-aged ribeye, medium-rare. The food arrives and it looks incredible. The server is grating fresh horseradish at the table, explaining the different sauces the chef prepared to complement the meat. My boyfriend just smiles, waits for him to leave, and then flags down a busboy. I thought he was going to ask for more water or something. Nope. He asks for ketchup. The busboy looked confused for a second before saying, 'Of course, sir.' My bf saw my face and was like 'What? I like ketchup with my steak.' I tried to explain that you just don't DO that with a steak of this quality. The chef spent over a month aging this beef, carefully preparing it, and he was going to slather it in high-fructose corn syrup like a kid eating chicken nuggets. It's not just a 'preference,' it's objectively wrong and disrespectful to the food, the chef, and honestly, to me, since I paid for this experience. they says I'm being a food snob and that he should be able to enjoy his meal however he wants. I feel like it's a huge red flag that he has such an unrefined palate. He ate his entire expensive steak with a puddle of Heinz next to it and I swear I died a little inside. It completely ruined the vibe of a really expensive and meaningful dinner. I don't even know if I can look at him the same way.
