My boyfriend thinks I'm being ridiculous for getting upset that he ate my leftovers.

By @avasorta · Relationships

He ate a very specific meal I was saving, one from a restaurant that no longer exists. I told him it was special to me and he doesn't seem to understand why it's a big deal.

The full story

I know this is going to sound silly, but I'm genuinely upset and I feel like my boyfriend just isn't getting it. Before we moved in together, there was this little Italian place near my old apartment that I absolutely loved. It was a real hole-in-the-wall spot, run by an older couple, and they made the best chicken parm I've ever had. It was my comfort food, the thing I'd get after a bad week. That place closed down about two years ago, which was honestly heartbreaking in a small way. Well, when they announced they were closing, I went one last time and got my usual, but I also ordered a second one to freeze. I've been saving it like a weird food fossil for a special occasion or a really bad day. I've moved twice with this thing, carefully packed. My boyfriend knew the story, I'd pointed it out in the freezer and told him it was my 'in case of emergency, break glass' meal. Last night, I came home from work and he was just finishing dinner. He'd eaten it. they said he was starving and it was the only thing in the freezer that looked like a full meal. I was speechless. I tried to explain that it wasn't just food, it was a memory. It was the last piece of a place that meant a lot to me. It sounds so trivial to say out loud, but it felt like he'd just carelessly consumed a piece of my history. He apologized, but in that 'I'm sorry you're upset' way. they said he'd buy me chicken parm from anywhere I want, but that's not the point. He thinks I'm overreacting to a frozen dinner and that I'm being sentimental about garbage. I feel like he's completely disregarding my feelings because he doesn't personally understand them.
