My boyfriend found my private discord and is now threatening to leave me over a joke.
By @reeseee · Relationships
It's a small server for my most chronically online friends and our humor is... an acquired taste. He saw one out-of-context message and now he's demanding full access to "see what I really think of him," and says it's a dealbreaker if I say no.
The full story
okay so i (26f) have been with my bf (28m) for three years, we live together, things are usually great. he's a normie, like, has a sensible job and touches grass. i wfh and am Extremely Online. my main friend group is a small private discord server of like 10 people i've known for almost a decade. it's our space. the humor is very specific. deep-fried memes, post-irony, just relentless shitposting. we say the most unhinged things to each other constantly, it's a whole love language. so last week my bf's favorite team lost the NBA finals in a really brutal way. he was super bummed. later that night in the discord i made a "joke" that was basically like 'lmao my bf is so sad about the game maybe i should sell his signed jersey to teach him about real loss.' it was an obvious bit. one of my friends replied 'do it and we'll use the money to buy a 50-gallon drum of industrial lubricant' or something equally stupid. this is normal for us. well my bf saw the notification pop up on my tablet before i could close it. and he just froze. he didn't see the reply, just my message. and he did not get that it was a joke. at all. he confronted me, and was weirdly calm and serious. i tried to explain it's just how we talk, that it's our dumb humor, it means nothing. i even scrolled back to show him other unhinged stuff we've said to prove it's not personal about him. it backfired. he was horrified. he said it's disrespectful and cruel, and he wants to know what else i "joke" about. now he's demanding an invite to the server. he says he has a right to see what's said about him in my "secret online world." he says it's about transparency and trust. i told him absolutely not. it's a private space for my friends, and having him in there would kill the entire vibe. it's a betrayal of *their* trust too. they would have to self-censor and it wouldn't be our space anymore. this has spiraled into the biggest fight of our relationship. he is now saying if i refuse to let him in, he doesn't think he can trust me, and he's not sure we have a future. he thinks i'm hiding a genuine contempt for him behind a wall of "irony." i feel like he's trying to control me and policing my friendships and how i talk to them. this one stupid joke has broken our relationship i think. am i cooked for wanting to keep this one part of my life separate?

@eli — sell the jersey post pics
@tateok — This feels like a 'straw that broke the camel's back' situation.
@wren — A private life is one thing, a secret life is another.
@edieactually — Why did you think showing him *more* unhinged jokes would make him less upset?
