My best friend's future mother-in-law asked for my 'honest opinion' and I think I broke her.

I was at my bestie's bridal shower, and her notoriously dramatic future MIL cornered me. I made a sarcastic joke that I thought was pretty mild, but it ended with a public crying scene and me becoming the villain of the party.

My best friend is getting married in a few months, and her future mother-in-law is... a character. The kind of person who thinks her son getting married is actually the pilot episode for her own reality show. Our friend group has a dedicated chat for her antics, which lately have included trying to veto the wedding dress and suggesting my friend's dad walk *her* down the aisle too, for 'balance.' So yesterday was the bridal shower. Everything is going as expected—she's rearranging the gift table, loudly telling guests how she suggested the 'much better' catering option, etc. Classic stuff. Then she gets me alone by the crudités. She's holding up two of the most awful fascinators I've ever seen. One is a giant purple feather explosion, and the other is a beige disc with what looks like a taxidermy finch glued to it. She asks me, dead serious, "Which one makes more of a statement? I want to look special, but not like I'm trying to compete with the bride." This is where I messed up. My sarcastic brain heard 'honest opinion' and took it as a green light. I said, without skipping a beat, "Well, the purple feathers say 'I'm the secret, more important bride,' but the dead bird says 'I'm mourning the loss of my son to another woman.' So it just depends on the subtle message you're going for." I fully expected her to laugh. Or at least give me a dirty look. Instead, her face just... crumpled. Her eyes filled with tears, her lip started trembling, and she whispered, loud enough for half the room to hear, "So you think I'm a monster who wants to ruin her wedding?" The whole party went silent. My friend stopped mid-gift. The MIL is now doing this dramatic, heaving-shoulder cry while her sister glares at me. It was the most awkward 20 minutes of my life. My friend isn't furious, but she's stressed and said I should've just smiled and picked the stupid bird hat for the sake of peace. Was I really supposed to lie?
