I think I learned the hard way that you should never share your location with a significant other.
By @marakk · Relationships
We agreed to share our locations for safety, a 'just in case' measure. I never thought it would be used as a weapon against me in the middle of a completely unrelated argument.
The full story
My girlfriend and I have been together for about two years. A while back, after she had a late night walk home that got a little sketchy, we decided to share our locations with each other through our phones. It felt practical, like a digital safety net. For months, it was great. Just a background feature we never used. And then last night happened. We got into a dumb argument over text about weekend plans. It wasn't a big deal, but I was annoyed and wanted some space, so I stopped replying for about an hour to cool off. I went for a walk to clear my head. Then my phone buzzed. It was her. The text just said: 'Are you seriously at the park by your ex's apartment right now?' I was floored. My blood ran cold. Yes, I was at that park, it's a nice park! My ex hasn't lived in that area for over a year. It wasn't even a conscious thought. But in that moment, none of that mattered. The trust just evaporated. She had gone from a normal argument to using a tool meant for my safety to track me and accuse me. It felt like such a massive violation. The fight isn't even about the weekend anymore. It's about this.

What people are saying
@taylorm — Soft.
@vincekindof — Why didn't you just tell her you needed an hour to cool off?
@xenafr — Her insecurity is leading to some seriously controlling behavior.
@finnkindof — Something tells me she has a reason to be worried about that specific ex.
@tessagain — Oh sweetie, that's such a terrible feeling. A tool for safety should never be used as a weapon.
