I hosted a grown-up, adult dinner party and it ended in a spaghetti-eating contest.

I spent a week planning this 'sophisticated' dinner. My boyfriend's friends somehow turned my homemade pasta into a competitive eating event, complete with a prize I didn't agree to.

The full story

I am not a professional chef, but I do love hosting. For my boyfriend's birthday, I wanted to do something a little more special than just going out. I planned a whole Italian-themed dinner party for us and six of our friends. I'm talking appetizers, a nice salad, I made homemade pasta from scratch, a tiramisu that took me two days... the works. I even made a custom playlist of Italian restaurant music. I wanted it to feel classy. Everything was going great. The first couple of courses were a hit, people were complimenting the food, the vibes were good. And then came the main course: spaghetti with a slow-cooked bolognese sauce. I was so proud of it. I served everyone a reasonable, adult-sized portion. But my boyfriend's best friend finished his in about 90 seconds and jokingly said, "Alright, who's next?" And that's where it all went off the rails. Before I knew it, two of his other friends were challenging him. They started talking trash, making bets. My boyfriend, instead of shutting it down, goes into the kitchen and comes back with the entire pot of spaghetti and a pair of tongs. He starts serving up these giant, disgusting piles of pasta onto their plates. They decided the 'winner' would get my unopened, very nice bottle of wine that was a housewarming gift. So there I was, in my nice dress, watching three grown men slurp spaghetti like wild animals at my carefully curated dinner party. There was sauce on the tablecloth, on one guy's shirt, it was just... a scene. They were timing each other on their phones and shouting. The other guests were just watching in horrified amusement. When it was over, the 'winner' grabbed the prize bottle of wine and did a victory lap around my dining room. My boyfriend thinks it was the funniest thing that's ever happened and that his friends will be talking about it for years. I feel like my classy dinner party was turned into a frat house nightmare.
