I have been pretending to be a huge soccer fan for three years to impress a girl.

By @finnfr · Relationships

When I met my girlfriend, she was watching a World Cup game and I wanted to have something to talk about. I picked the team she was rooting for and faked my way through the conversation. Now she thinks I'm a diehard fan.

The full story

Okay, so this is dumb, I know. I met my now-girlfriend at a bar during the World Cup a few years back. She was super into it, and I was super into her. To break the ice, I asked about the game. I just mirrored all her opinions. She got excited, thinking she'd found another superfan. I've been keeping this up for our entire relationship. I've watched countless games I don't care about. I have a jersey. Her dad and I text about the games. I've learned just enough to sound legit, but I live in constant fear of being exposed. My friend thinks it's hilarious, but I'm getting tired. We just got tickets to fly to a major tournament next summer and it's going to cost a fortune. I'm starting to think this joke has gone way too far and I need an exit strategy. I can't keep this up forever, but telling her now feels like admitting our entire relationship started with a stupid lie.
