You should not be allowed to reserve a parking spot by standing in it.

Went to the hardware store this morning and the lot was a zoo. Found an open spot and this lady runs out of her car and just stands in it, waving me off saying her husband is 'right there.'.

It's Saturday morning, of course the parking lot is a nightmare. I'm circling for probably ten minutes when I see brake lights. Guy pulls out, I flick my blinker on, and start to turn in. Out of nowhere, this woman who was in the passenger seat of a car two rows over gets out, runs into the empty space, and puts her hands up like a traffic cop. She's yelling 'Nope, we got this one!' and pointing back at her car where her husband is now starting to slowly back out to come get it. I told her that's not how it works. It's a car-sized spot for a car, not a person. A screaming match ensued. Am I supposed to just forfeit a spot to a person standing there?
