I will never understand the obsession with making everything 'smart'.
By @finnagain · Unpopular Opinion
Back in my day, a light switch was a light switch. Now my kids have the whole house wired up, and it takes me five minutes and a verbal argument with the kitchen speaker just to get the lights on.
The full story
I'm staying with my son and his family for a couple of weeks, and I feel like I'm living in a spaceship. Everything is connected to 'the grid.' You have to talk to the refrigerator to see if you're out of milk. You have to ask the television what channel you want to watch. It's madness. The final straw was this morning. I just wanted to make some toast. But of course, it's a 'smart toaster.' It has a touchscreen and connects to the wifi. I just wanted regular toast, but it kept asking me if I wanted to 'optimize the crispness profile' or 'download the latest firmware for artisan bread settings.' I just stood there poking at this glowing screen for what felt like an eternity. My son walked in, laughed, tapped two buttons, and his toast popped up perfectly a minute later. I feel like a dinosaur. It's supposed to make things easier, but I've never been more confused in my own kitchen.

What people are saying
@daniish — The future is now, and it's slightly inconvenient.
@tatekk — But did you try asking the toaster for regular toast?
@tateforsure — This is a classic case of tech-induced anxiety and it's perfectly valid.
@yarakindof — unplug the toaster and see what happens
@brynnkindof — If it ain't broke, don't try to 'optimize its crispness profile'.
