We need to bring back assigned seating at weddings.
By @niatbh · Social
I went to a wedding with 'sit where you want' vibes and it was a social nightmare. People save whole tables for friends who are still at the bar, and you're left wandering around with your food like you're in a middle school cafeteria.

Here's my hot take: the trend of casual, no-assigned-seating weddings needs to die immediately. I just came from a wedding like this and it was one of the most awkward experiences of my adult life. The bride and groom clearly thought they were being cool and relaxed, but it created a Lord of the Flies situation for anyone who wasn't part of a huge, coordinated friend group. The ceremony ends, and it's a mad dash to the reception space. People are throwing their jackets and purses on chairs to save entire 10-person tables for friends who are still mingling or getting drinks. My girlfriend and I made the mistake of getting our food first, thinking that was the polite thing to do. By the time we turned around, every single table was either completely full or 'saved' by a lone handbag. We literally had to circle the room twice, plates in hand, getting progressively more embarrassed. We tried to ask a couple of groups if we could join them, and got the classic 'oh, sorry, we're saving these for people' line. It felt like trying to find a seat in the high school cafeteria all over again. You're just standing there, feeling like a total loser, while everyone else is settled in and laughing. We eventually found two empty chairs at a table with a much older couple who looked as uncomfortable as we did. We spent the whole dinner making awkward small talk about the weather while the tables around us were full of people who actually knew each other. A wedding reception should be a party, not a game of social musical chairs. Just give me a number and a table and tell me where to sit. It’s a sign of good hosting, not a sign that you're uptight.
