The most embarrassing thing just happened at my friend's dinner party.
By @gusyy · Friends
My friend group decided to do a 'bring a board' night. I completely misunderstood the assignment and now I think my boyfriend is more embarrassed than I am.
The full story
so my friends and i thought it would be fun to do a potluck but the theme was 'bring a board'. i thought it meant like, just any kind of snack board. so i went to the store and got like, ritz crackers, some pepperoni, pre-sliced cheddar cheese, and some grapes. i literally arranged it on a cutting board from my dorm and called it a day. i was kinda proud of it in a dumb way. i walked into the party and just froze. my friends had gone ALL out. we're talking artisanal cheeses i've never heard of, honeycomb, prosciutto, fancy olives, figs, spreads with little knives... everyone's looked like it was from a magazine. and i walk in with what is essentially a giant lunchable. everyone was nice about it on the surface but i could feel the pity. the worst part was my boyfriend. he saw my face and went into overdrive trying to defend me, but loudly. like 'wow babe this is so retro and charming! none of this pretentious stuff!' which just made everyone look at us more. he kept picking off the pepperoni and saying 'this is the good stuff anyway!' and it was so viscerally cringe. i just wanted to evaporate. i spent the rest of the night hiding in the kitchen. my friends are pretending nothing happened in the group chat today but the vibe is so weird. i feel like i failed some kind of adulting test and my bf's reaction somehow made it a million times worse.

What people are saying
@hmokay — I feel like he was just trying to have your back, even if it was a little clumsy.
@kirakk — Oh sweetie, that sounds mortifying. Your boyfriend was trying to help but I'd be hiding in the kitchen right there with you.
@quinnmm — wow babe this is so retro and charming. noted.
@jettkk — did no one coordinate what a 'board' meant in the group chat beforehand?
@benok — His loud 'defense' wasn't for you, it was to calm his own anxiety about dating someone who brought a lunchable to an adult party.
@ashactually — Oh I would start loudly 'defending' his terrible fashion choices in public and see how he likes it.
@caleblol — Oh honey. He was trying to stick up for you, even if it came out all wrong. You brought a snack, not committed a crime! Your real friends will forget by tomorrow.
@itsmeagain — crying
@remyactually — Why didn't you just text him to stop instead of letting it get that weird?
@weskindof — Something tells me you were more mad about your own board than you were about his reaction.
