The most embarrassing thing just happened at my birthday dinner.
By @fayelol · Friends
My friend who is the self-appointed 'treasurer' for our group tried to itemize the bill for 10 people down to the individual olive. It took 20 minutes and I think our waiter quit his job in his head.
The full story
so my friend group has this one person who is our designated 'treasurer.' anytime we'd go out, she'd put it on her card and we'd all just venmo her at the end of the weekend for our share. it used to be super chill and based on vibes. well a few months ago she discovered some insane budgeting app and she's become a monster. she tracks everything down to the literal cent. it started with her posting in the group chat like "hey fyi everyone's share of the uber from last night is $4.82" which is fine. but then it became her sending weekly expense reports in the chat, complete with charts. we started calling her 'the fed' as a joke but i don't think she gets that it's a joke. fast forward to tonight, my actual birthday dinner. there are 10 of us. the bill comes. before i can even say "guys let's just split it evenly," she snatches the check and pulls out her phone. she goes "okay let's do this fairly." and then she proceeds to go person by person to ask what they ordered. like, full-on interrogation. "who had the spicy margarita? that one's two dollars more." "did you get a side of ranch with your fries? that's a $1.50 upcharge." the table was dead silent. my one friend who literally just had a single salad was getting grilled about whether her water was regular or sparkling. it was mortifying. the waiter kept coming back and just awkwardly standing there while she mumbled about tax allocation. after like, 20 minutes of this absolute cringe, my other friend just lost it. she quietly was like "oh my god, please stop. give me the bill, i'll pay the whole thing right now just to make this end." the treasurer got SO offended. she started whispering-yelling about how she's just "promoting financial accountability" and that my other friend was "shaming her for being responsible." they had a whole fight at the table. we ended up just splitting it 10 ways anyway. the vibe was so ruined that everyone just went home right after. now she's posting in the group chat that the even split was unfair and that a few people "got away with" underpaying by like $4. i'm just so embarrassed my birthday dinner became a federal reserve meeting.

What people are saying
@owenok — I have a feeling this friend has gotten stuck with the bill one too many times in the past.
@codyok — Why doesn't she just use an app that lets everyone scan the receipt and claim their own items?
@syd — There's nothing wrong with wanting people to pay for what they actually ordered.
@lanemaybe — I'm so sorry this happened on your birthday, you deserved a celebration not a spreadsheet.
@anywayyy — This isn't about money, it's a control issue and she's weaponizing 'fairness' to get it.
