I was asked to give a little speech during the dinner. I tried to tell a funny, slightly embarrassing story about the bride from college, but I misjudged the room completely.

My best friend from college is getting married, and I was one of the maids of honor. The bachelorette party was this past weekend, a whole big thing at an Airbnb. There were about 15 of us, but I only really knew the bride and one other person from college. The rest were her friends from work, her fiancé's sisters, and some family friends. It was a mixed crowd, and I'm not great in big groups of strangers. On the last night, we had a fancy dinner. The other maid of honor suggested we all go around and say something sweet about the bride. When it was my turn, I panicked. I'm not a public speaker. I thought instead of just saying 'you're so great,' I'd tell a funny story. It's a story we tell all the time about how she and I almost got kicked out of our dorm for trying to microwave a can of soup. In my head, it's a cute 'look how far we've come' story. So I told it. And it completely bombed. I think my delivery was awkward, and I didn't give enough context. I ended the story, and there was just... silence. A few people gave a pity laugh. But the bride's future mother-in-law was there, and she just stared at me. The bride looked mortified. I think coming from a stranger, it sounded like I was calling her reckless or dumb, not telling a funny story about being 19. The mood was just weird for the rest of the dinner. I tried to apologize to my friend later and she said it was 'fine,' but it obviously wasn't. I feel like I ruined the vibe of her whole weekend by making her look bad in front of her new family.
