After agreeing to a $600 limit, the maid of honor booked private chefs and a chartered boat that pushed individual costs over $1,400. they told me to put the difference on a credit card or risk ruining the bride's milestone trip.

The full story

My best friend is getting married next spring, and our friend group has been organizing her bachelorette trip. The maid of honor picked an upscale beach town, and everyone initially agreed to keep total lodging and shared events under $600 per person. That seemed realistic for everyone involved, especially since three of us are flying in. Last week, the maid of honor sent an updated budget sheet. Without asking anyone, she booked a private chef dinner, chartered a sunset catamaran cruise, and added matching custom silk pajamas for every girl. The new shared cost is $1,450 per person, before flights or individual drinks. When I messaged her privately to say this was more than double what we agreed on and that I literally cannot swing that kind of cash right now, her response was completely dismissive. they told me that 'it's a once-in-a-lifetime milestone' for our friend and suggested that if I really cared about the bride, I would put it on a credit card and pay it off slowly. She also said stepping out of the shared activities isn't an option because it would make the photos look awkward and leave the bride feeling unsupported. I work in public school administration, and dropping $1,500 on a four-day weekend genuinely puts my emergency savings in danger. On the other hand, this is my closest childhood friend. If I formally back out of the trip, the remaining girls will have to absorb my share of the villa rental, which will make everyone resent me and likely create a massive rift right before the wedding. I'm trying to decide whether to pull out of the trip entirely and just attend the local wedding ceremony, or swallow the financial hit on credit to preserve the peace. Leaving this up to you all.
