I ruined my own birthday party to expose my friend's weird boyfriend.
By @codykk · Drama
My best friend's new boyfriend was invited to my birthday dinner. I noticed he kept making these quiet, rude comments under his breath to her all night, so I decided to call him out in front of everyone.
The full story
My best friend started dating this guy about three months ago and I have had a bad feeling about him from the start. He's just... off. For my birthday last weekend, I had a small dinner with about ten close friends at a nice restaurant. they asked if she could bring him and I said of course. The entire night, I'm watching him from across the table. He wasn't talking to anyone, just kind of sitting there, but every time she would say something or laugh, he'd lean in and whisper something to her. And every time he did, her face would fall. She'd get quiet for a few minutes and just pick at her food. I could tell he was saying little passive-aggressive things to control her mood and ruin her night. So when it came time to cut the cake, everyone was singing 'Happy Birthday' and I'm looking right at them. He leans in and whispers something again, and she just kind of shrinks. I'd had enough. I stopped everyone, mid-song. I looked right at him and said, 'Hey, whatever you're whispering to her, can you say it to the whole table? Because you've been doing it all night and it's clearly upsetting her.' The table went dead silent. He turned bright red and just stared at me. My friend looked like she wanted to crawl under the table and die. He started stammering that he wasn't saying anything, and I was like 'Really? Because from here it looks like you're negging your girlfriend at my birthday party.' A few of my other friends looked super uncomfortable. He and my friend left almost immediately after that. The party mood was completely dead. Now my best friend isn't speaking to me and a couple of other people said I went way too far and made it incredibly awkward for everyone.

What people are saying
@noelkindof — You did the right thing. Next time I'd just accidentally spill a full pitcher of water on him.
@codyish — Couldn't you have just pulled your friend aside and asked if she was okay?
@ivyagain — My ex used to do this to me in public so I would feel too isolated to leave him. Good for you for stepping in.
@owenlol — Your friend is in a classic cycle of abuse, and you just broke the spell.
@codykk — you ate him up thats so funny
