The absolute worst feeling is speaking up against an even bill split when you barely ordered anything.
By @jettmaybe · Money
I ordered an $18 pasta and water while three people at dinner drank expensive cocktails, but someone announced we were splitting the entire check evenly at $68 each. Speaking up to just pay for my own plate made the entire table go dead silent and treat me like I ruined the vibe.
The full story
So last night seven of us went out to celebrate our friend's 21st birthday at this sit-down Italian place downtown. I'm a junior in college, completely broke, and living off savings and financial aid, so I was being super careful with my money. I ordered an $18 pasta plate, drank tap water the entire night, and skipped appetizers and dessert entirely. Meanwhile, three people at the end of the table were ordering round after round of $16 specialty cocktails, someone ordered two appetizers 'for the table' that only they ate, and someone else got a $42 steak entrée. When the bill comes, one girl immediately grabs the receipt, pulls out her calculator app, and announces 'okay, it's $68 each before tip!' My stomach literally dropped. The sheer awkwardness of sitting there frozen while everyone is already opening Venmo is unmatched. I quietly spoke up and said, 'Hey, I only had the pasta and water, would it be okay if I just put in $25 to cover my dish and tip?' The whole energy at the table instantly shifted into this painful, agonizing silence. The girl holding the check literally sighed out loud, rolled her eyes, and said, 'I mean yeah sure, if we have to recalculate everyone's tax and split it all manually now.' Two other people looked down at their phones looking deeply uncomfortable, like I just ruined the birthday mood over forty dollars. I ended up paying just for what I ordered, but the walk back to our cars was dead silent and nobody made eye contact with me. I hate how asking to only pay for what you actually ate gets treated like a social crime.
