Every time someone buys a new vehicle, they ruin the carpool agreement.

By @tateliterally · Money

My coworker and I split driving days fifty-fifty for three years with zero cash exchanged, but now that he bought a hybrid, he wants me to pay him twenty-five dollars a week because my truck burns more fuel. I told him our deal was about driving time, not fuel math, and now our morning commute is dead silent.

The full story

We work twelve-hour shifts on site, four days a week. For three years, my buddy and I had a set carpool routine. I drive Mondays and Tuesdays in my truck. He drives Wednesdays and Thursdays in his sedan. We never exchanged a dime because the mileage and wear broke even across the month. It was simple and it worked. Last week, he traded his sedan in for a hybrid crossover. First day riding together, we pull up to our shift and he hits me with a spreadsheet on his phone showing his fuel efficiency compared to my V8. they says since my truck burns double the fuel per mile, I need to pay him twenty-five bucks a week to offset the difference, or else he only wants to drive every third week while I drive two. I told him he bought the new rig for himself, not for our commute, and our agreement was always splitting the driving days 50/50. He claims gas is expensive and it makes zero sense for him to save me money while taking on the fuel burden. Now we're riding forty minutes in total silence every morning because neither of us wants to back down over twenty-five dollars. Leaving it up to yall.
