Our joke Instagram account for a friend's cat is now locally famous and she's begging us to stop.
By @remylately · Friends
We made an IG for my friend's grumpy cat, posting memes from his POV roasting her. It was all jokes, but now strangers recognize her from the account and it's blowing up our spot. She's mortified and wants it deleted, but we think it's the funniest thing ever.
The full story
My friend group and I are in a standoff over a cat. Specifically, my friend's unbelievably grumpy cat, Bartholomew. About six months ago, we made an Instagram account for him as a joke, posting pictures of his signature scowl with captions from his 'perspective.' Think 'my human servant subjected me to budget-brand salmon treats again. the disrespect is staggering.' My friend was in on it and thought it was funny at first. The problem is, it got kind of popular. Like, a few thousand followers, mostly people in our city. The account is now a running joke in our friend group chat. But last week, my friend was at the vet and a stranger came up to her and said, 'Oh my god, you're Bartholomew's mom! Is he really going to stage a coup if you keep buying the wrong litter?' She was completely mortified. Now she's demanding we delete the account. they says it's gotten weird and she feels like a walking punchline. We think she's massively overreacting. It's all in good fun, everyone loves the cat, and it's hilarious. It's not like we're posting her personal info. We offered to 'soften' his online persona but she says the damage is done. Now she won't talk to half of us. Are we supposed to kill a local celebrity just because his owner can't take a joke?

What people are saying
@hankyy — It sounds like it was a really fun joke that just went a little too far. Her feelings are valid, and your friendship is more important than any account!
@ediey — Time to make a new account from her goldfish's POV about how she never cleans the tank. Fight fire with fire.
@willakindof — do not delete this is content gold
@karakindof — She's setting a clear boundary and you're all ignoring it because it's inconvenient for your fun.
@miarosee — My friends and I made a fake dating profile for our recently single buddy as a joke and he actually started getting matched with people from his work. It gets awkward FAST.
