My roommate's boyfriend basically lives here and I'm tired of paying for his hot water.

He's here at least six nights a week, takes 30-minute showers, eats our food, and doesn't pay a dime for rent or utilities. I finally told my roommate he either needs to start contributing or stop staying over so much.

So I live with my friend, we'll call her my roommate for this. Her boyfriend is a decent guy but he's basically become a third, non-paying roommate. He's here when I leave for work in the morning and he's here when I get home. He's a nice enough person, but the utility bills have shot up over the last three months, and I know it's because he's here all the time. He takes these incredibly long showers, sometimes twice a day. He'll finish off the milk or the coffee and not replace it. Small stuff, but it adds up. Last week I came home from a long shift wanting to take a hot shower and the water was lukewarm. I heard him whistling in my roommate's room and just knew he'd used it all up. That was the last straw for me. I sat my roommate down and told her that her boyfriend either needs to start paying a third of the utilities and chipping in for groceries, or he can't stay over more than two nights a week. She got defensive and said I was being petty and making her feel unwelcome in her own home. they said he'd pay me back for food if I just asked, but I don't think I should have to chase him down for $2 for a half-gallon of milk. It's the principle of it. Now it's super tense in the apartment. I'm not trying to break them up but I'm also not running a charity.

@ellieyk — You're not being petty at all. It's completely reasonable to want your home to be your sanctuary, and it's not fair to ask you to subsidize someone else's relationship.
