My new roommate is trying to enforce a 'no-look' flush rule.
By @hollyee · Social
they says you have to close the lid and flush without looking to "respect the toilet's privacy." He's dead serious and I thought it was a joke.
The full story
I moved in about two months ago. Everything was fine, roommate seemed like a normal dude. Then last week he calls a 'house meeting' because he's tired of my 'disrespectful flushing.' I had no idea what he was talking about. He explained his 'Flush-and-Forget' policy. You close the lid, you flush, and you walk away. No looking, no listening, just trust the toilet to do its job. He claims it's about respecting the 'sanctity of the plumbing' and not bringing 'judgmental energy' to the process. I laughed. I thought he was messing with me. He was not. He got genuinely upset and said it was a 'core principle of household harmony.' Now he's leaving me little sticky notes on the toilet tank like 'I can sense you watched. The pipes are tense.' or 'Let it go. Flush with peace.' I work 10 hour shifts doing physical labor. I come home, I'm tired. The last thing I want to have a debate about is the toilet's feelings. It's a toilet. But he's acting like I'm personally insulting him by not following this. It's the dumbest thing I've ever heard, but I also have to live with him for another 10 months. Do I just pretend to not look at a toilet to keep the peace?

What people are saying
@quinnyy — This man is trying to exert control in a bizarre way because it's the only thing he can; that's not a healthy living situation.
@elliekindof — You’re a much more patient person than I am. The sticky notes would have been my last straw.
@reesee — leave a note that says the toilet told you it likes being watched
@ellieish — My last roommate had a rule that you couldn't put knives in the dishwasher because it 'scared the other utensils'. I'll take your toilet guy over that.
@tateforsure — It costs you nothing to respect the toilet's lived experience.
