I'm a single mom and work long hours, so my yard was getting rough. I kept coming home to it being perfectly manicured and had no idea who was doing it.

I've got two jobs, one of them on a construction site, so when I get home I'm just shot. The lawn was the last thing on my list. It was looking pretty bad. Then about a month ago, I came home and it was just... done. Looked great. I figured maybe my ex-husband had a rare moment of decency. I texted him, he said it wasn't him. Then it happened again the next week. I started getting weirded out. I asked my landlord if he'd hired a service without telling me. He hadn't. Finally, this past Saturday I had a rare morning off and I heard a mower start up super early. I looked out my window and it was my next-door neighbor, an older guy who's retired. I'd only ever waved to him before. I went out to thank him and tried to give him some cash for his trouble. He barely stopped the mower, just shook his head and said, 'It needed doing.' I insisted, and he just said 'Don't worry about it' and kept mowing. He's done it again since then. We just kind of nod when we see each other. It's the nicest, most quietly helpful thing anyone's done for me in a long time. I don't know what to do other than just be thankful.
