My friend group has a 'surcharge' for anyone who is more than 15 minutes late to dinner.

They say it's to make sure everyone shows up on time, but it feels like I'm being fined for hitting traffic. Last night I had to pay an extra $10 on top of my bill because I was 20 minutes late.

The full story

It started a few months ago. Someone was always late, making our 7:30 reservations turn into 8:00 reservations. So, as a joke, someone suggested a 'tardiness tax.' Now it's a real thing. If you're more than 15 minutes late, you have to add $10 to the tip pool. I'm usually on time, but last night a wreck on the freeway made me 20 minutes late and everyone just looked at me and pointed to the 'late jar' when I sat down. Is this a normal friend thing?
