My friend group cannot agree if 'liking' a message is a real response.

The great group chat war of 2026 is upon us. Some of us think that 'liking' or 'hearting' a message is enough to confirm you've seen it, and the other half thinks it's a conversation-killing, passive-aggressive crime.

The full story

this literally started as a joke but now it's actually causing friction lol. we have a group of like 8 people and it's basically split down the middle. the 'likers'—as we now call them—think it's efficient. someone posts a plan like 'hey movie at 8?' and they just tap the little heart and assume that means 'yes i'm in.' simple. efficient. no notification spam. the other side, my side, thinks this is insane behavior. a 'like' is not a confirmation. it's a low-effort way to kill a conversation or seem dismissive. like you're too busy or important to type 'ok' or 'sounds good.' last week the likers just 'liked' a dinner plan and then two of them didn't show up. their excuse was 'oh i just liked it to show i saw it, not to say i was coming.' like what????? so now there's this entire secondary meta-conversation happening about the rules of communication. we've got people saying 'just to be clear my 'like' on this message means i am confirming my attendance' which is so funny and also so stupid. the discourse has gotten so deep that people are digging up articles about digital body language. i feel like i'm losing my mind but also... i need to be proven right. it's not a real response. it's just a lazy little tap. am i cooked for being this invested in a group chat war.
