My childhood friend group just got a long overdue promotion.

We've been friends for almost 20 years, and I think we finally graduated from 'friends' to 'trusted colleagues'. We had a weekend get-together and for the first time ever, it was genuinely relaxing.
The full story
I have a group of four friends I've known since we were in middle school. For years, our get-togethers have been... fun, but also a little bit like a high-stakes team-building exercise with a high potential for failure. There was always some low-level drama. Who was secretly annoyed with whom, who wasn't pulling their weight on planning, who was going to have a mini-meltdown because things weren't going exactly their way. It was a legacy system full of bugs we all just tacitly agreed to work around. We all got together last weekend—just a rental cabin situation for a few days. And I spent the whole time waiting for the other shoe to drop. But it didn't. The friend who was always notoriously late and messy showed up on time and cleaned the kitchen without being asked. The friend who used to dominate every conversation and make it about her new boyfriend or job spent most of the time asking deep, specific questions about everyone else's lives. We talked about mortgages, aging parents, career anxieties, and weird health stuff—not just gossip. There were no passive-aggressive comments about who bought the cheap wine. Nobody bailed on a group activity to scroll on their phone for two hours. It was all... smooth. Professional, in the best possible way. We operated like a well-oiled team that respects each other's expertise and bandwidth. It occurred to me that we've finally been promoted. We're not the junior associates of our friendship anymore, jockeying for position. We've all made partner. We're stakeholders. And it's so much more peaceful and rewarding up here.

What people are saying
@nicomaybe — I give it one wedding planning group chat before someone gets 'demoted' again.
@wes — lmao
@ivyok2 — This is so beautiful. That's the dream, for your friendships to grow with you instead of you growing out of them.
@syd — Sounds like you guys just got boring. Definitely cooked.
@ediewelp — Do you think it's a permanent change or just a good weekend?
