My book club wants to charge a monthly fee and I’m ready to quit.

For years, our book club has been free and casual. Now a newer member is pushing for a $15/month fee from everyone to 'elevate the experience' with fancy snacks and gifts for the host.

This started as a simple way for a group of us from the neighborhood to see each other and talk about something other than work. The host provides the space, everyone else brings a cheap bottle of wine or a bag of chips. It's been perfect. Suddenly this new system is being proposed and about half the group is on board. I just don't get it. I'm not paying $180 a year for crackers and a candle. It was a book club, not a country club. Am I being unreasonable for thinking this ruins the whole point?
