I thought getting my boyfriend a GPS tracker for his cat was a good idea.

It was a joke gift, mostly. But he actually uses it, and now he's treating the cat's daily roaming like it's a high-stakes intelligence operation.

The full story

My boyfriend has this indoor-outdoor cat who is his entire world. The cat is gone for hours at a time, and he's always wondering where he goes. So for his birthday, as a funny gift, I got him one of those collar trackers that shows you on a map where your pet is. I thought he'd laugh, maybe use it for a day, and that would be it. I was wrong. It has become his entire personality. He has a tablet set up in the living room with the live map open 24/7. He gives us 'mission briefings' in the morning. 'Okay, looks like Mittens is beginning his morning patrol, starting with the property line at the old oak tree.' He has named all the neighbor's yards like they're different countries ('he's entering the Gundersons' territory now, they have a dog, this is tense people'). Last night was the final straw. He woke me up at 2 AM in a full panic. He was whispering 'HE'S GONE ROGUE! HE'S GONE ROGUE!' I thought the house was being robbed. No. The cat had crossed the main road at the end of our neighborhood, which he has designated a 'no-fly zone.' My boyfriend was grabbing a flashlight and a bag of treats to 'extract the asset.' I had to talk him down from going out in his boxers to 'rescue' a cat who was probably just hunting a mouse in a field. I created this monster and I don't know how to stop it.
