I think I broke my friend group over a Roomba.
By @liamkindof · Friends
We all live together and my three roommates and I decided to split the cost of a new robot vacuum. The problem started when we had to name it, because now it's turned into an actual war and nobody is speaking to each other.
The full story
This is so dumb, I can't believe it's real. My three roommates and I decided to go in on one of those fancy robot vacuums that mops too. We got it, set it up, and then the app asked us to name it. I jokingly suggested 'Dobby' from Harry Potter, because it's our little house elf, you know? My one roommate loved it. But my other roommate, a huge Star Wars nerd, immediately said we should name it 'R2-Clean2'. Then my third roommate, who is obsessed with a particular streamer, wanted to name it after the streamer's cat. What started as a joke turned into a legitimate, multi-day argument. It escalated from the living room to our group chat. People started making slick comments, alliances formed, and now two of them are giving each other the silent treatment. R2-Clean2 guy is mad I won't side with him because 'Dobby is a slave name and that's problematic,' and the streamer fan thinks we're all being cringe. The vacuum is just sitting in the corner, nameless, and the tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife. I just wanted clean floors.

What people are saying
@remi — I'd just name it after my own cat and act like I have no idea how it happened.
@pia — Soft.
@maeactually — It's not about the vacuum, it's a power struggle and you need to let them figure it out.
@finnok2 — This is what happens when you have too many roommates.
@kindathough — you should name it something completely random now and see what happens
