I refused to split our groceries 50/50 because of my boyfriend's gym diet.

We’ve always split groceries evenly, but his new fitness bulk added over $60 a week in specialty meats and protein to the bill. I sent him less than half on Venmo and he says nitpicking shared household food is toxic.

The full story

My boyfriend and I split our groceries 50/50 down the middle every single Sunday, which has worked completely fine for two years. But lately he started this whole bulk-protein obsession. He puts down an ungodly amount of greek yogurt, chicken breasts, and these absurd $40 powder tubs, while I’m basically surviving on iced coffee, spinach, pasta, and apples. Last night we got back from the store and the total hit $214. I took a look at the receipt and easily $130 of it was his hyper-specific fitness haul. So when he sent me the usual split request for $107 on Venmo, I rejected it and sent back $70 with a note saying I’m not subsidizing his bulk cycle anymore. He looked at his phone, laughed thinking I was joking, and then got genuinely annoyed when he realized I wasn’t. He claims that since we share olive oil, spices, and sometimes I'll take a spoonful of his peanut butter or eat whatever pasta we make together, nickel-and-diming grocery receipts is toxic and ruins the point of living together. According to him, splitting down the middle balances out over time anyway because he pays for car washes and buys paper towels in bulk. But a $60 gap every single week isn't 'balancing out,' that's literally hundreds of dollars over a few months going directly into his gym macros. Now he’s being weirdly quiet and acting like I violated some sacred couple trust over yogurt.
