I meant charcuterie boards. Everyone else brought cheese, cured meats, fruit, etc. This one girl I don't know super well brought an actual, antique-looking Ouija board and wanted to 'connect with the other side' in the middle of my dinner party.

Okay so I love hosting, but I wanted to do something low-key. I have a group chat with about 15 friends and I sent a message saying 'hey! let's do a 'bring a board' night at my place Saturday!'. I thought the context was obvious. The last few parties everyone's had, people have been bringing these gorgeous, elaborate charcuterie boards. It's become a whole thing on TikTok and whatever. So I thought, fun! Everyone brings a different themed board, we all get to try different stuff, it's less pressure on me to cook a full meal. Simple, right? Wrong. So, so wrong. The night starts off great. People are showing up with the most amazing stuff. One friend did a dessert board with mini cheesecakes and chocolate covered strawberries. Another did a brunch board with tiny waffles and bacon. We had a vegan board, a classic cheese board, a fruit board... it was perfect. And then SHE arrives. A friend of a friend who I've met a couple of times but don't really know. She walks in holding this... dusty, old-looking wooden box. I'm thinking, 'oh, cool, maybe it's like a vintage wine box with some fancy cheese inside?' No. She sets it down on the coffee table, right next to the brie and the prosciutto, and dramatically opens it. It's a Ouija board. Like, a serious, creepy-looking one, not the Parker Brothers version from when we were kids. And she says, completely deadpan, 'The vibes in this apartment are really active. I thought we could see who's here.' Everyone just froze. The music is playing, people are mid-bite, and we're all just staring at this girl. My best friend is trying so hard not to laugh. Another friend looks genuinely freaked out. And I'm just standing there, host smile plastered on my face, thinking 'what is the etiquette for this?'. I finally just mumbled 'Oh, wow, that's... a very unique board!' and tried to steer her towards the food. But for the rest of the night she kept trying to get people to play, asking if we 'heard that?' every time the ice maker made a noise. It was the most awkward party I've ever thrown.
