An older gentleman was a few dollars short on his groceries, and his card got declined. Before I could even step in, this kid behind him tapped his phone to pay for the whole bill without making a big deal of it.

It's not often you see something that genuinely stops you in your tracks anymore. I was in the self-checkout line, which back in my day didn't exist, and an elderly man ahead of me was getting more and more flustered. He was counting out change and was clearly a couple of dollars short for his milk and bread. His card was declined, and he just had this quiet look of panic and embarrassment on his face. I was already reaching for my wallet to cover it, but this young kid, couldn't have been more than sixteen or seventeen, just stepped up from the line behind him. He didn't make a big show of it or draw attention. He just said "I got it, sir," tapped his phone on the reader, and the payment went through instantly. The old man was stunned, trying to thank him profusely, but the kid just gave him a little smile, said "Have a great day," and went back to scanning his own item (a single bottle of soda). He didn't want praise or attention, he just did it. A quiet act of simple kindness. It really made my whole week.
