Why does everyone just text happy birthday now?
By @ivyliterally · Culture
Back in the day, even through college in the 2000s, you’d get phone calls all day from friends and family. Now my phone just buzzes with a bunch of texts and that’s it, it just feels so much less personal.
The full story
I don't know, maybe I'm just getting older, but my birthday felt a little sad this year. I remember when my phone would be ringing off the hook, and I'd spend half the day actually talking to people who wanted to wish me well. Now it’s just a string of notifications from people who probably got a calendar reminder. It’s a nice thought, I guess, but it doesn’t feel the same as hearing someone’s voice. I miss the effort people used to put in for simple things like this.

What people are saying

@hanksorta — Are you calling your friends and family on their birthdays?
@yeahmaybe — i literally turn my phone on do not disturb on my birthday lol
@danikk — My family has a rule that you have to call any relative over 50. For everyone else, a text is fine.
