Why does every kid's birthday party have to be a major production now?

My sister is spending hundreds on a party for my 7-year-old nephew and I told her it's ridiculous. We had cake and pin the tail on the donkey in the backyard and we were happy.

She's rented a bouncy castle, hired a caterer, and has personalized gift bags. For a bunch of seven-year-olds who won't care or remember any of it in a week. I told her she's just trying to show off for the other parents and it's a huge waste of money. they says she just wants to make the day special for her son, but I think it's nuts. A simple party at home is just as special. Honestly it just feels like another thing that's gotten out of hand.
