We cannot agree on the right way to listen to a new album.

My girlfriend thinks I'm a monster because I don't listen to new albums in order the first time. She insists on listening from track one to the end, no skips, no interruptions. I think that's an insane way to approach music in 2026.

The full story

My girlfriend and I have a long-running, completely pointless argument that has flared up again. It's about how to properly consume a new album when it drops. She is a purist: you have to listen from the first track to the last, in order, with no skips. You're supposed to absorb the 'artist's vision' and the 'narrative arc' of the album. She makes a whole ceremony out of it—headphones on, lights dimmed, no talking. they says it's a sign of respect for the art. I just can't do it that way. When a new album I'm excited about is released, I jump around. I'll listen to the songs with the features I recognize first, or the ones with titles that sound interesting, or maybe just the singles I already know. I'm basically sampling the album to find the songs I like best, and then I'll add those to my playlists and listen to them on repeat. I'll eventually hear all the songs, just not in order and not in one sitting. To me, this is just how music works now with streaming. We have instant access to everything, so why would I force myself to sit through a 4-minute interlude or a song I can tell in the first 30 seconds I'm not going to like? It feels like a waste of time. My girlfriend says this is musical sacrilege and that I have the attention span of a gnat. She claims I'm 'ruining the experience' and not giving the album a fair chance. I argue that the 'album experience' is an outdated concept for the most part, and that the artist's real goal is for me to find and love *any* of their songs, regardless of how I get there. This came up again because a major artist we both like just released a new project. She did her whole ritual, and I immediately skipped to track 7 because I heard it was the best one. She looked at me with such genuine disappointment it was almost funny. they says I'm disrespecting the artist and the entire process. I think she's being dramatic and gatekeeping how people are allowed to enjoy things. It's a low-stakes argument, but we're both dug in. Am I really a barbarian for skipping around on a new album?
