We cannot agree on the official rules for leftovers in the office fridge.
By @colewelp · Was I Wrong
A coworker ate my lunch, admitted it, but claims there's a 24-hour 'unspoken rule' that anything left overnight is a free-for-all. I've worked in offices for 15 years and have never heard of this.
The full story
I am what you might call a creature of habit. I meal prep. Every Sunday, I make five identical, healthy, and admittedly somewhat boring lunches for the week. It simplifies my life. I label my containers. My name is on them in very clear handwriting. On Tuesday, I went to the communal kitchen fridge to get my lunch, and it was gone. Not misplaced, not pushed to the back. Gone. I asked the few people sitting in the kitchen area if they'd seen my container, and my coworker—let's call him a 'forager'—casually says, 'Oh, was that the chicken and quinoa? Yeah, I ate that this morning for breakfast. Hope you don't mind.' I did mind. I calmly explained that it was my lunch for the day and that I label my food for a reason. He looked genuinely surprised that I was bothered. His argument, which he delivered with complete sincerity, is that any food left in the office fridge overnight is automatically communal property. He called it the '24-hour rule' and said it's standard office etiquette to prevent the fridge from becoming a science experiment. I told him that's not a rule; the rule is you don't eat food with someone else's name on it. He then polled the room, and to my shock, two other people agreed with him. they said if you leave it overnight, you're forfeiting your claim. I feel like I'm losing my mind. This isn't about the $8 worth of ingredients; it's about the principle. I had to buy a sad, expensive salad from the cafe downstairs. Now there's a recurring calendar invite for a 'Fridge Rules Committee' meeting, and I'm honestly not sure if it's a joke. Was I wrong to expect my labeled food to be safe for more than one night?
