The most embarrassing thing just happened at my own birthday dinner.

By @liamhm · Was I Wrong

My girlfriend's sister decided to use my birthday dinner as the moment to announce her pregnancy. I barely know her and now my entire family thinks I'm going to be an uncle.

The full story

So for my 30th birthday, my girlfriend and I planned a nice dinner at an Italian restaurant with my parents, my brother, and a few of our closest friends. It was supposed to be a special night, you know? A celebration for me. We're halfway through the main course when my girlfriend's sister, who I've met maybe three times, stands up and clinks her glass. I thought she was going to make a toast for me. Nope. She announces, beaming, that she's pregnant. The entire table erupts. Everyone is screaming and hugging her and her husband. My parents, who are a little old-fashioned and don't fully grasp that we aren't married, immediately started congratulating me, thinking this was a joint announcement or something. My dad clapped me on the back and said, 'Didn't know you had it in you!' I had to spend the next ten minutes awkwardly explaining to my own family that I am not, in fact, the father. My girlfriend is mortified and apologized profusely afterwards. But her sister doesn't see what the big deal is. they said she was just 'caught up in the happy moment.' I feel like my own milestone birthday got completely hijacked. I went from being the center of attention to a side character in someone else's big life event, and had to field confusing questions from my own family. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to be mad, but I am.
