The most embarrassing thing happened when my boyfriend's mom cooked for me.
By @gabelately · Food
His mom spent three hours making a custom dish for my diet, but the first bite tasted so vile I reflexively spat it into my napkin at the table. My boyfriend says I humiliated her and should have forced myself to swallow it to be polite.
The full story
The whole thing was excruciating because his mom literally made this huge presentation out of bringing the tray to the table. She baked this vegan casserole from scratch because my boyfriend told her last week that I was trying to eat mostly plant-based this semester. She looked so genuinely proud and kept talking about how hard it was to find the specific dairy-free cheese at the store. I took one bite, and it tasted like scorched earth and straight vinegar. Like, completely inedible. I could feel my boyfriend watching me from across the table with wide eyes, and instead of just choking down a few polite courtesy bites like a normal guest, my face betrayed me instantly. I had this violent gag reflex, reached for a napkin, and spat it right out in front of his entire family. Total dead silence. His little sister started giggling, his mom looked completely crushed, and I immediately started stammering that my throat just caught weirdly. But everyone at the table knew what actually happened. After dinner, my boyfriend said I should have swallowed the bite and just quietly pushed the rest around my plate instead of making a scene. I told him my body literally rejected it before my brain could stop it, and faking enthusiasm would've just forced me to eat a whole bowl of garbage. But now I feel sick just thinking about ever seeing his mom again.
