My sister hijacked our family vacation planning to turn it into her personal influencer trip.
By @noelok · Family
We try to take one family trip a year, and this time it was my turn to pick the destination. My sister immediately took over the group chat, dismissing my ideas and instead pitching places solely based on how good they would be for her 'content.'.
The full story
So, our family has this tradition where every year, one of the siblings gets to pick our big family vacation spot. It's a system we've had for years and it's always worked out. This year was finally my turn, and I was genuinely so excited. I've been wanting to do a low-key, relaxing trip to a national park, maybe do some hiking, rent a big cabin, just disconnect for a week. I thought it sounded nice and pretty uncontroversial. I presented my idea to the family group chat. My parents were on board, my brother was excited. And then… my sister responded. For context, she's been trying to become a travel/lifestyle influencer for the past year or so. It's her entire personality now. Everything is about the 'gram. She immediately shot down my idea. Called it 'boring' and 'un-aesthetic.' Before I could even defend myself, she started flooding the chat with links to boutique hotels in Tulum, Bali, and Mykonos. She sent screenshots of other influencers in these flowy dresses on picturesque beaches. She started talking about the potential for 'collabs' and how this trip could be 'huge for her brand.' It was wild. She completely took over the conversation. She made a whole PowerPoint presentation—I'm not kidding—detailing the 'content opportunities' at each of her proposed locations, complete with a shot list and potential brand hashtags. My parents, who usually stay out of it, started to get swayed by her slick presentation. They started saying things like, 'well, a beach does sound nice...' and 'it would be a new experience.' I tried to gently push back, reminding everyone that it was my turn to choose and that I wanted something quiet and nature-focused. My sister’s response was to say I was being selfish and not thinking about the 'family's potential to make memories we can capture beautifully.' She literally said that. She then sent me a private message saying if I was so obsessed with 'brown and green nature places,' I could just go by myself on a weekend, but that I shouldn't 'waste' the one big family trip of the year on something so un-photogenic. Now the whole plan is in limbo and everyone's looking at me like I'm the one being difficult for not wanting to be an unpaid cameraman on her content-creation journey.

@lanemaybe — bruh
@ughokayfine — This is giving me flashbacks to when my brother insisted our entire family wear matching t-shirts with his face on them for a full day at Disney World.
@alyssamaybe — The fact your parents are enabling this is the real problem.
@anywayyy — Your sister's powerpoint is my villain origin story.
@maxx — Honestly, a national park cabin trip sounds like a dream. Stick to your guns, it's YOUR turn and your idea is a wonderful one.
