I'm not cheap, but I am fair. My roommate is a disaster. He leaves food out, dishes pile up for weeks, and his stuff explodes all over the living room and kitchen. I've talked to him about it a dozen times. He always says 'my bad, I'll do better' and then nothing changes. I gave up. For the last few months, I've just been keeping my own space spotless and cleaning up after myself in the kitchen immediately. I don't touch his mess. Last week, he tells me he's hiring a deep cleaning service because the apartment is 'getting gross'. I said 'good for you', thinking he was finally taking some responsibility. The cleaners came, spent about four hours here, and honestly, the place looks great. Smells better, too. Then last night, I get a Venmo request for $200. The memo line just said 'Cleaners'. I asked him what that was about and he said it's my half of the bill. I told him I'm not paying it. That's his mess, his filth. Why should I have to pay a tax on his laziness? I keep my own area clean. He got mad and said we both live here, so we split the costs of maintaining the apartment, and that I'm getting to enjoy the clean apartment too so it's only fair I pitch in. I declined the request. He's not talking to me now, but I don't think I'm in the wrong here. It's the principle of the thing.
