My roommate sent me a Venmo request for $2.74 for 'over-consumption of shared milk'.
By @tateee · Petty or Nah
We agreed to loosely share some basic groceries like milk and butter. Now he's literally tracking my usage and created a spreadsheet to bill me for my 'share' which is apparently more than his.
The full story
ok this is so much dumber in writing but i'm losing my mind. so a few months ago my roommate (21M) and i (20M) decided to just kinda share basic kitchen staples. things like milk, butter, cooking oil, salt, etc. the idea was it's annoying to have two half-empty cartons of milk taking up space and it would all even out in the end. whoever goes to the store just grabs it and the other person gets it next time. simple, right? that's how normal people function. for a while it was fine. but in the last month he's gotten weirdly militant about it. it started with little passive aggressive comments like "oh, having cereal again?" if he'd just bought the milk. i laughed it off. then he started labeling his name on stuff we were supposedly sharing. then, the spreadsheet. he mentioned it in passing, that he was "just trying to keep things fair." i thought he was joking. he was not joking. last night i got a venmo request for $2.74 with the note "milk/butter overage (april-may)." i confronted him about it and he pulled up an actual excel spreadsheet on his laptop. he has formulas. he calculated the average number of servings in a half-gallon of milk, estimated his usage vs my usage, and then billed me for the difference. he said i use too much when i make protein shakes and that when my gf comes over and has coffee, that should "technically count against my share." i'm just staring at this request on my phone. part of me wants to just pay the ridiculous $2.74 to make this go away. but another part of me feels like i'm living with a psycho and this is a matter of principle. i buy stuff too! i probably bought the last two things of butter but i didn't document it because i'm not an accountant. i feel like if i pay it, he's just gonna start billing me for using too much toilet paper next. what do i even do here?
