The full story
so i (20f) have been living with my roommate (21f) for a year in an off-campus apartment. our lease is incredibly strict: absolutely no pets, no exceptions. it's in bold on the first page. two months ago, she comes home with a rescue puppy, maybe 10 weeks old. she swore it was a temporary situation, that a friend would take him in a week. that was two months ago. the dog isn't trained. at all. he chews on the furniture, has accidents on the rug, and barks constantly. i've tried to be patient, but i'm a full-time student and i can't be a part-time puppy-sitter. i've had to replace three phone chargers and a pair of shoes. she always says she'll pay me back but 'forgets'. the real problem happened yesterday. i came home from my afternoon lab and found my bedroom door open, which is weird because i always shut it. the dog had gotten in and had been using my room as a chew toy. and he found my grandfather's watch, which i kept on my nightstand. it's not worth a ton of money, but it's the only real thing i have left from him. he gave it to me before he passed away. and it was just... shredded. chewed to absolute pieces, the band torn, the face cracked. i just broke down. when my roommate got home, i showed her, crying, and she had the nerve to say 'oh wow, oops' before saying it was just an accident and 'puppies will be puppies'. when i told her she needed to at least try to pay for it to be repaired, she scoffed and said it was an old watch anyway and that i am overreacting. she said i must secretly hate dogs and that's the real issue. i don't know what to do. our landlord is doing annual inspections in a few weeks. if they find the dog, we're both getting evicted and losing our security deposit. but she's acting like i'm the villain for being upset that her illegal dog destroyed my one priceless possession. i feel like i'm being held hostage.
