My mother-in-law is holding our wedding album hostage over a name.

By @zanelately · Family

We just got our wedding photos back and they're beautiful. The problem is my mother-in-law paid for the photographer, and now she's refusing to give us the actual album until we agree to use her 'traditional' family name for our first-born son.

The full story

My husband and I have been married for six months. His mom was always a little... intense, but I thought we had a decent relationship. For our wedding, she generously offered to pay for the photographer, which was a huge expense we couldn't afford on our own. We just received the link to the digital gallery last week and the photos are stunning, everything we dreamed of. The photographer is now ready to print the big, fancy album that was part of the package. But when my husband called his mom to coordinate, she dropped a bomb. they told him, straight-faced, that she won't release the final payment to the photographer for our album until we promise her — in writing — that our first son will be named after my husband's great-grandfather. It's an old, very traditional name that we just don't like. We had a boy's name picked out already that we both love. We haven't even started trying for a baby yet! I feel like she's holding our memories hostage for a hypothetical child's name. My husband is trying to be the peacemaker, saying she'll calm down, but I'm furious. This feels like a massive overstep and a horrible way to start our marriage. Now our beautiful wedding photos are tainted by this insane demand.
