I'm not sure if this is normal. My girlfriend and I have been together for about three years, and this was the first big vacation I've taken with her whole family (her parents, her sister and husband, and her younger brother). It was a week at a lake house. I went into it knowing we'd be splitting costs for the house and groceries, which is totally fair. But I wasn't prepared for the spreadsheet. Her dad is the 'organizer' and he tracks everything. Every grocery run, every bag of ice, every six-pack of beer. If you ate a hot dog, you were allocated a portion of the cost of the bun, the hot dog itself, and the condiments. Her brother drank more beer than anyone else, so the spreadsheet has a special column calculating his larger share of the alcohol cost. My girlfriend and I were marked down for a higher percentage of the gas for the boat, because we used it for water skiing one afternoon. I am not exaggerating. The spreadsheet has formulas. It has color-coding. It has footnotes. I got the email this morning with the subject line 'Lake Trip 2026 - Final Expense Report' and a Venmo request for my 'Total Due'. My family's vacations are the total opposite. Someone gets the house, someone else stocks the fridge, someone grabs dinner. It all just... evens out. We don't keep score. When I tried to talk to my girlfriend about it, she got defensive. they said it's the only way to keep things fair because everyone has different incomes and it prevents resentment. She thinks my family's way is actually unfair because someone always ends up paying more. I paid the Venmo request because I don't want to cause a huge fight. But it feels so cold and transactional, like a business trip, not a family vacation. It makes me feel like an outsider, and honestly, it makes me not want to go on another trip with them. I feel like every single thing I ate or did was being monitored and entered into a ledger.
