My favorite director's new movie is getting terrible reviews, and I'm honestly sad about it.

I've been a huge fan of this director for years. His movies were a big part of my film school experience and I was so excited for his new release, but the reviews are calling it a total disaster. Now my friends want to go see it this weekend to 'hate watch' it and I don't want to go.

I know it sounds dramatic to be this invested in a movie, but this director's work means a lot to me. I've seen all his films, I've read books about his techniques, and his style heavily influenced my own small projects. I've been waiting for this new film for almost three years. The first reviews dropped a few days ago and they're brutal. Critics I usually agree with are calling it a self-indulgent mess and a huge disappointment. My group chat is now filled with memes and jokes about how bad it is. They've decided it's the perfect 'so bad it's good' movie night. They booked tickets for Saturday and are all talking about how fun it will be to laugh at it. The idea just makes me feel... uncomfortable. I don't want my first time seeing it to be in a context where everyone is making fun of it. It feels disrespectful, almost like going to a friend's funeral to crack jokes. I told them I think I'm going to sit this one out, and now they're acting like I'm being pretentious and can't take a joke. I just want to see it by myself, quietly, and form my own opinion without being surrounded by mockery.
