I think Star Wars is massively overrated and my family acts like I’ve committed a crime.

At every family gathering, my brothers and dad inevitably start talking about Star Wars. When I said I just don't get the hype, you would have thought I’d insulted them personally. Now it's a running 'joke' that I have bad taste.

I just don't get it. I was born in the early 80s, so I was the prime age for all of it, but it never clicked for me. My dad took my two older brothers to see the original movies in theaters and it became this huge bonding thing for them that's lasted their whole lives. To this day, they can quote every line, they have debates about canon vs. the 'Legends' universe, they buy the Lego sets for their own kids. It's their whole personality. I’ve tried watching them. I really have. A few years ago, my brothers sat me down to watch 'A New Hope' and I just found it... kind of boring? The dialogue is clunky, the plot holes are big enough to fly a Star Destroyer through, and I just can't bring myself to care about a farm boy who has a crush on his own sister for half a movie. I said as much, calmly, and the reaction was genuinely shocking. My dad told me I 'didn't understand cinema,' and my brothers acted like I had personally attacked their childhoods. Now, it's a whole thing. Every Christmas, birthday, whatever... they'll get me some ironic Star Wars gift, like a Jar Jar Binks talking figure. When we're picking a movie to watch, someone will say, 'Well, we can't watch anything with a good story, because someone here won't appreciate it.' It’s constant little digs. I feel like I'm being punished for not liking a movie franchise. It’s not that serious, but after years of this, it's incredibly annoying. Am I supposed to just lie and pretend I like it to keep the peace?
