My family cannot agree on how to split the check when we eat out.

By @owenok2 · Family

When my extended family goes out for a big dinner, it always ends in a 20-minute debate. Some want to split the bill evenly per person to keep it simple, but others want to calculate exactly what each person ordered.

The full story

It's a recurring issue. My aunt's family, who usually orders more appetizers and drinks, insists on splitting the bill evenly because it's 'easier' and 'more communal.' My parents and I, who typically just get main courses, feel it's unfair to subsidize their more expensive tastes. It gets awkward because whoever argues for itemizing is made to feel cheap. I suggested using a bill-splitting app next time, but the idea was immediately shot down as too complicated. I'm looking for a simple, fair solution before our next family dinner.
