My brother expects me to help pay for his wedding years after refusing to pay back a major loan.

A few years ago, I loaned him $5,000 for a business venture that went nowhere. He never paid me a dime. Now he and his fiancée are planning a huge wedding and have the nerve to ask me to contribute.

The full story

I don't think I'm wrong here, but my parents are making me feel like I am. Six years ago, my brother asked me for $5,000. He had a 'can't-miss' idea for a food truck. I was hesitant but he's my brother, so I gave it to him from my savings. The business never even got off the ground and I never saw a cent of that money again. Every time I brought it up, he'd say 'I'll get you back when I'm on my feet.' Well, now he and his fiancée are planning a ridiculously expensive wedding. We're talking a 200-person venue, a designer dress, the works. Last week during a family dinner, they announced they're 'accepting contributions' to help fund their 'dream day.' Then my brother looked right at me and said he hoped I'd chip in a generous amount. I just stared at him. I said, 'How about you use the $5,000 you still owe me?' He got defensive, said that was a business loss and this is a family celebration. My parents are trying to 'keep the peace' and told me I should let the loan go for the sake of the family and just give them a nice wedding gift. I said absolutely not. This isn't about the money anymore, it's about the principle. Why should I fund his party when he stole from me?
