My boyfriend's friends Venmo-request me for gas money when he drives them.

By @ellieliterally · Money

My boyfriend (26M) is the designated driver for his friend group. Last weekend, he drove them to a concert about an hour away. The next morning, I (25F) woke up to three separate $15 Venmo requests from his friends for 'gas and tolls'.

The full story

This has happened three times now. My boyfriend and his friends have a system where they all pitch in for gas and tolls whenever one of them drives for a group thing, which is totally normal. But my boyfriend's car is technically mine—it's in my name, I make the payments, I pay the insurance. We live together so we share it, which I'm fine with. But here's the thing. His friends all know this. The first time it happened, I was confused and just paid it. The second time, I asked my boyfriend about it, and he was like, 'Oh yeah, I gave them your Venmo, it's just easier so I don't have to send it to you.' I told him that was weird and that HE should be the one getting the money since he was the one driving and it's his friends. He just laughed and said I was being dramatic. This time, the concert was an hour away, so the requests were for $15 each. It feels so weird and transactional. They're his friends, not mine. I feel like I'm their a rideshare driver's accountant or something. I told my boyfriend I'm not paying the requests and he needs to tell his friends to cancel them and request him instead. Now he's annoyed and saying I'm making a huge deal out of nothing and making things awkward in his friend group.
